Training for Adult Leaders
Youth Leader Training (YLT)
Youth Leader Training (YLT) is the mandatory training for anyone wishing to take a lead role within a BB Company, and for leaders who wish to extend their skills and knowledge in working with children and young people. YLT is made up of a series of modules: Introduction to BB; Working with Under 11s; Working with Over 11s; Programme Planning & Delivery; Sharing Faith; Equal Opportunities; and Safeguarding — covering the guiding principles of safeguarding, the 4 R's (Recognise, Respond, Report, Record) and appropriate boundaries. Add below any leaders who need to start or complete their YLT.
Youth Leader Training — Safeguarding(Standalone Module)
This YLT module covers the guiding principles of safeguarding, understanding harm and abuse, working through realistic scenarios, the 4 R's — Recognise, Respond, Report and Record — and recognising and understanding appropriate boundaries when working with children and young people.
Youth Leader Training — Managing Risk(Standalone Module)
This YLT module is a practical guide to risk assessments and risk-benefit analysis, helping leaders plan and run activities safely while still offering challenge and adventure to children and young people.
Company Management Training
Company Management Training (formerly Captain's Training) is mandatory for anyone taking on a management role within the BB. The training consists of an in-depth look at the role and responsibilities of the Captain or Leader-in-Charge, building and maintaining relationships, safeguarding and safer recruitment, the Leaders' Code of Conduct, and the tools and resources available to support the role.
Holiday Leadership Certificate
This training is mandatory for any leader taking a lead role for a camp or holiday, and certificates are valid for five years. The course covers preparing for a camp or holiday, safety and risk management, food hygiene, and building good relationships within the leadership team and with the young people in your care.
Camp Craft Certificate
This training is mandatory for any leader taking responsibility for a canvas camp, and certificates are valid for five years. The course covers setting up standing camps, cooking equipment and accommodation, sanitation and safety, and includes practical campcraft experience under canvas.
Expedition & Outdoor Leadership Certificate
This certificate is a requirement for those training or supervising expeditions, and is valid for five years. Certificates are kept live by providing a record of residentials and camps every five years, and will in future also require completion of an e-learning module.
Training for Young People
Building Your Skills Training
Building Your Skills Training is open to young people in Year 1 of the Seniors age group, or older, working towards the President’s Badge, or any young person who would benefit from developing and building on their teamwork and negotiating skills. The aim of this course is for young people to develop the skills to work cooperatively with others, to help make a difference in their life and in their Company.

Skills for King’s Badge Training
Skills for King’s Badge Training is open to young people who have started their King’s Badge. This course covers the skills-based training requirement of the King’s Badge and is ideal for any young person about to take on responsibility working with children in a BB group. The aim of this course is to equip King’s Badge participants with the skills and knowledge to work effectively and safely with children in a BB company.
